Reality of 13 Reasons Why

Have you watched the series yet? If you haven’t, exit from this page right now and just get back once you’ve finished the 13 episodes.

I love watching TV shows and I watch a lot of them. I am the type of girl who spends weekends binging on Netflix. There’s something really special about 13 Reasons Why that urged me to write about it right now during my work hours.

Mixed reactions were gathered from the viewers. Some loved it and thought that it is  a great show to raise awareness about suicide. And there are some who hated it because they say it might trigger your inner suicidal thoughts. For me, I feel like I stand in between these two crowd reactions. I mean the show is deep enough to make you feel the pain the characters are going through. At the same time, it somehow teaches a lesson about our life decisions.

We have all been there- High School drama. And the show really depicts how crazy and way beyond bullying can lead people to. As the saying goes, “You can be the ripest, juiciest peach in the world, and there’s still going to be somebody who hates peaches”.

One lesson young and adult people can get from this show is not to care about what other people think. I know it is easy to say, but when you are in high school it seems like everything is permanent- which is not the case. Life goes on and bad past will always transform into a good present if you want it to be.

Regarding the sexual assault and rape part, I was very alarmed. Say, how many other girls have been through this? We will never know. I personally have three friends from different phases of my life who were sexually violated and raped when they were in high school. Because of the fear of being judged or humiliated, they just let the crime to slide. How sad and disturbing right? Bryce’s character very much implied that men like him just get away easily and worse, they do it again to other women.

Lastly, suicide. I have to admit that I used to have this kind of thoughts when I was younger. Looking back now, the reasons are just petty stuff I wasn’t able to get or accept back then. I guess the lesson here is to help yourselves during this times. We go through different issues and no other person can better assess what you feel than yourself. Be mindful of your decisions and actions. Always remember that you have a family and friends who will be greatly affected if something happens to you.

Be a friend to others as well. No one knows what others are going through so be kind always. Be there and let them feel that they are not alone.

13 Reasons Why is not just a regular young adult series. It portrays a wide range of emotions people deal in an everyday basis. It shows us the reality. I think it is up to you how you would see the meaning of the show. And I hope it affects you in a positive way.
